V5 Ultimate vs Arena PLM

Arena PLM is a cloud PLM: items, BOMs, AMLs, ECO / ECR / ECN workflows, supplier collaboration, and a QMS module (Arena QMS) that covers document control, training, CAPA and complaint. It is intentionally not an MES — Device History Records, floor routing and real-time execution live in a separate system. V5 Ultimate is a single platform: the released DMR revision drives the routing, the eDHR self-builds per serial as the operator works, and QMS objects (CAPA, deviations, change control) tie back to the same serial.

Arena is authoritative for the item, the BOM and the revision. Once the DMR is released, Arena assumes the shop floor executes it somewhere else — a paper traveller, an ERP work order, a separate MES, or all three. V5 picks up at that boundary: the operator kiosk pulls the current DMR revision from V5's own controlled repository, only that revision is visible on the line, torque and vision tools are calibration-gated, and the eDHR locks the moment final inspection signs. Most Arena + V5 customers keep Arena as the design-side source of truth and let V5 own everything from work-order release onward.

Arena's design-control support is strong for BOM-centric evidence — item-level traceability, ECO history, effectivity dating. V5's design controls are execution-centric — the same Requirements Traceability Matrix that proves a URS is tested is the spine of the equipment qualification (IQ / OQ / PQ) that keeps that URS provable in production. For a pure pre-market DHF workflow Arena is often enough; the moment you need the RTM to survive into manufacturing verification, V5's coverage is closer.

Arena PLM is cloud-only, hosted on AWS. V5 ships in two deployments: Lovable Cloud and V5 Ultimate On-Premises (containerised, air-gap capable, customer-owned keys and data). On-prem matters for implantables, defence-linked programmes and combination products where records cannot leave the site.

Arena has shipped AI-assisted BOM analysis and ECO suggestion features. V5's AI layer is regime-aware — for a device tenant it speaks DHR / DMR / UDI / DI+PI / GUDID / EUDAMED and uses ISO 13485 + 21 CFR 820 templates. Both vendors are explicit that AI does not e-sign; a qualified human always does the Part 11 signature.

Arena quotes annual subscription per user with tiered PLM + QMS bundles; enterprise pricing is not public. V5 publishes per-user / month for Cloud and an annual term licence for On-Premises with a free trial and no minimum seat count. Arena is often cheaper for a design team of 20 that does not need MES; V5 tends to win for sites with 50+ floor operators who would otherwise pay for Arena + a separate MES.

Multi-site engineering teams whose primary need is BOM + ECO governance across an outsourced supply chain, companies who use one or more contract manufacturers and only need the PLM/QMS layer, or organisations already standardised on PTC (Windchill, Creo, Codebeamer) who want a first-party integration.

Device manufacturers who own their production line and want eDHR self-building per serial, sites that would otherwise pay for Arena + a separate MES on top, on-prem / air-gap requirements, or combination-product manufacturers who need pharma BMR + device DHR on one stack.
