What each product actually is

Jama Connect is a requirements-management + verification-and-validation platform: requirements, tests, risk, reviews, and Live Traceability across the whole tree. It is not a QMS and it is not an MESCAPA, complaint, document control, training, DHRs and floor execution live in separate systems. V5 Ultimate is one platform: DMR-locked routing, per-serial eDHR self-building, calibrated tool integration, WMS, and QMS objects (CAPA, deviations, change control) on the same stack.

Requirements and traceability

This is Jama's flagship strength and it is genuinely deep — live impact analysis when a requirement changes, reusable requirement sets across variants, real-time collaboration and review workflows tuned for very large trees (10k+ requirements). V5 covers requirements + RTM natively but does not match Jama's UI depth at that scale. For a large hardware programme with a mature Jama tenant, the common pattern is Jama for requirements and V5 for QMS + execution, integrated via REST.

Design controls and DHF

Jama has a strong Medical Device solution that covers design inputs, design outputs, verification, validation and ISO 14971 risk linkage. It is not itself a DHF system in the regulatory sense — the DHF is the collection of records, and Jama is one of the source systems that feeds it. V5's design controls are lighter on ALM UI but the DHF, DMR and DHR live in the same platform, so evidence carries across the design→production boundary without an ETL.

Execution on the floor and eDHR

Jama does not run the shop floor. The DHR is not a Jama concept. V5 is the build environment: the routing references the locked DMR revision, only that revision is visible on the operator kiosk, torque and vision tools are calibration-gated, the UDI label prints at the workstation, and the eDHR locks the moment final inspection signs.

QMS surface

Jama is not a QMS. CAPA, complaint, document control, training, audit and change control all live in a separate system (typically Greenlight, MasterControl, ETQ or similar). V5 is one platform for QMS + eDHR + MES + WMS, so a customer who is deploying V5 usually retires one QMS and one MES at the same time.

Deployment

Jama Connect ships as cloud (Jama Connect Cloud) and on-premises for enterprise. V5 ships as Lovable Cloud and V5 Ultimate On-Premises (containerised, air-gap capable). On-prem parity is real; V5's on-prem includes the execution + QMS layers, which Jama's on-prem does not.

AI behaviour

Jama has shipped AI-assisted requirement suggestion, review and translation. V5's AI layer is regime-aware — for a device tenant it speaks DHR / DMR / UDI / DI+PI / GUDID / EUDAMED and uses ISO 13485 + 21 CFR 820 templates. Both vendors are explicit that AI does not e-sign; a qualified human always signs.

Pricing model

Jama is enterprise-quoted with tiered author / reviewer / reader seats and multi-year commitments; not published. V5 publishes per-user / month for Cloud and an annual term licence for On-Premises with a free trial and no minimum. For very large hardware programmes Jama is often already a sunk cost; for green-field device manufacturers V5 is usually cheaper end-to-end.

Where Jama Connect is the better fit

Very large hardware or complex-systems programmes (medical, aerospace, automotive) with 10k+ requirements, teams that value Live Traceability and reviewer-heavy workflows, or organisations that already have Jama and just need to add a QMS + MES beside it.

Where V5 Ultimate is the better fit

Device manufacturers who own their production line and want QMS + eDHR + MES + WMS on one stack, sites where a separate requirements tool is overkill, on-prem / air-gap deployments including the execution layer, or combination-product manufacturers who need pharma BMR + device DHR on one platform.
