Vegan, Vegetarian, Kosher and Halal Supplement Formulation Playbook

Vegan, vegetarian, kosher and halal supplement positioning has moved from niche to mainstream across multiple supplement categories, with consumer-recognised certification marks (Vegan Society, Vegetarian Society, OU, OK, Star-K, IFANCA, JAKIM) commanding retail-shelf premium and increasingly required by major retailers. Defensible vegan, kosher and halal claims demand attention well beyond the active-ingredient bill of materials — capsule shell composition, vitamin source verification (D3 from lanolin vs lichen, K2 from natto fermentation vs synthetic, B12 fermentation source), magnesium stearate animal vs vegetable origin, lactose-derived excipient handling, manufacturing-line shared-use validation, and chain-of-custody documentation. Capsule shell selection — gelatin vs HPMC vs pullulan

The capsule shell is the most common formulation gap between intent and reality for vegan, vegetarian, kosher and halal supplement positioning. Gelatin capsules — derived from bovine or porcine bone and hide — are not vegan, not vegetarian, not halal unless from a halal-slaughtered bovine source with certification, and not kosher unless from a kosher-slaughtered bovine source with certification (specifically excluding porcine for both halal and kosher). Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC, hypromellose) capsules — derived from plant cellulose — are vegan, vegetarian, kosher pareve (typically), and halal. Pullulan capsules — derived from tapioca fermentation by Aureobasidium pullulans — are vegan, vegetarian, kosher pareve, halal, and additionally offer low oxygen permeability favoured for oxidation-sensitive actives. Modified starch and starch-based capsules are emerging alternatives. The supplier specification, shell composition COA and certification documentation must be captured per SKU and verified against the labelled claim — gelatin capsule SKUs labelled vegan are a recurring high-visibility compliance and reputational failure. Cross-contamination on shared capsule-filling lines is a secondary concern where vegan SKUs share equipment with gelatin SKUs — validated cleaning between campaigns is the control.

Vitamin source verification — D3, K2, B12 and the lanolin trap

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is traditionally sourced from sheep's wool grease (lanolin) — not vegan. Vegan vitamin D3 from lichen (Cladonia rangiferina and related species) is commercially available at premium cost and is the appropriate source for vegan SKUs; supplier certification of lichen origin with chain of custody is essential because lanolin substitution is a documented adulteration pattern. Vitamin K2 (menaquinones) is traditionally produced by Bacillus subtilis natto fermentation of soybeans, which is vegan acceptable but carries soy allergen status — synthetic K2 production is emerging. Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, adenosylcobalamin) is produced by microbial fermentation (Propionibacterium freudenreichii, Pseudomonas denitrificans and others) and is vegan acceptable provided the fermentation media is plant-sourced — animal-derived media (gelatin growth substrate) has been reported requiring supplier verification. Omega-3 EPA/DHA from algal source (Schizochytrium sp., Crypthecodinium cohnii) is the vegan alternative to fish oil; krill, fish oil and calamarine sources are not vegan and require species and source verification for kosher (kosher fish criteria — fins and scales) and halal (halal slaughter does not apply to fish but cross-contamination at processing facility matters). Glucosamine from shellfish source is not vegan; vegan glucosamine from fungal fermentation (Aspergillus niger) is available. Chondroitin from bovine, porcine or shark is not vegan; vegan chondroitin alternatives are limited and emerging.

Excipient screening — stearates, lactose, gelatin shells and the hidden animal content

Excipient screening for vegan/vegetarian/kosher/halal positioning catches the hidden animal content frequently missed by active-ingredient review. Magnesium stearate and stearic acid can be plant or animal derived; the source must be specified — vegetable-derived stearates from palm or coconut are vegan acceptable, animal-derived from bovine tallow are not. Lactose excipient (carrier in many capsule and tablet formulations) is milk-derived not vegan, and triggers dairy allergen labelling; vegan SKUs require lactose-free excipient (microcrystalline cellulose, mannitol, dicalcium phosphate). Glycerin/glycerol can be plant or animal sourced — vegetable glycerin from coconut/palm/soy is vegan. Lecithin can be soy, sunflower, egg or other sources — soy and sunflower lecithin are vegan, egg lecithin is not. Carmine/cochineal red colourant from cochineal insects is not vegan, not kosher and not halal. Shellac glaze and confectioner's glaze from lac insect resin is not vegan and ambiguous kosher status. Beeswax and bee-derived ingredients (royal jelly, bee pollen, propolis) are not vegan. Coating systems often contain hidden animal-derived plasticisers or release agents requiring supplier-specification level due diligence. The defensible approach is a full excipient screening checklist applied at formulation gate plus supplier certification per excipient per SKU.

Certification programmes — Vegan Society, Vegetarian Society, OU, IFANCA, JAKIM

Vegan certification: The Vegan Society (UK, Vegan Trademark) is the dominant international vegan certification with strict requirements covering no animal-derived ingredients, no animal-derived processing aids, no animal testing for the product or any ingredient at any stage by the company or anyone on its behalf, and reasonable steps to ensure that no genetic engineering modification using animal genes has been used. Vegan Action (Certified Vegan) operates in the US with similar scope. Vegetarian Society (UK, Vegetarian Trademark) certification covers free from slaughtered animal-derived ingredients, free from genetically modified ingredients, no cross-contamination with non-vegetarian products, and no animal testing. Kosher certification: Orthodox Union (OU) is the dominant US and international kosher certification with the OU symbol; OK Kosher, Star-K, KOF-K and CRC operate alongside. Kosher classification of pareve (neither meat nor dairy), dairy, or meat applies. Halal certification: IFANCA (Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America) is dominant in US, JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) is the global benchmark for halal authority recognition, MUI (Indonesia) is critical for Indonesian market access, ESMA (UAE) and SFDA (Saudi Arabia) for GCC. Each certification requires facility audit, ingredient and supplier review, manufacturing process review (shared equipment, cleaning validation, segregation), label artwork review and ongoing surveillance. Multiple certifications can be pursued in parallel and stacked on the same SKU where the underlying formulation meets all standards.

Manufacturing controls, chain of custody and operational discipline

Manufacturing controls for vegan/vegetarian/kosher/halal positioning extend beyond ingredient selection to facility and process controls. Shared-equipment manufacturing between vegan and non-vegan products requires validated cleaning between campaigns with cleaning verification appropriate to the certification — vegan certification accepts validated cleaning as cross-contamination control while strict kosher (kosher equipment status / koshering procedures) and strict halal (Islamic dietary law cleaning standards) may require dedicated equipment or more rigorous segregation depending on the certification body. Kosher manufacturing often requires on-site mashgiach (kosher supervisor) presence during production for certified runs. Halal manufacturing requires halal-trained personnel and Islamic dietary law compliance throughout the process including no alcohol-based cleaning where applicable. Chain of custody from raw material supplier through finished product to retail shelf must be documented — supplier certificates, manufacturing batch records, finished product testing and label artwork all aligned with the certification scope. Operational discipline includes pre-production checklist verifying certification status of every BOM component against the SKU's claimed certifications, manufacturing run authorisation gated on cleaning verification and supervisor presence where required, retention sample programme supporting any post-market certification investigation, and certification-body audit-readiness with the documentation package easily retrievable.

Can a gelatin capsule supplement be vegetarian?
Generally no for strict vegetarian certification standards. Gelatin is derived from bovine or porcine bone, hide and connective tissue — by-product of slaughtered animals. The Vegetarian Society UK explicitly excludes ingredients from slaughtered animals including gelatin, rennet, isinglass, cochineal and bone-derived ingredients. A 'lacto-ovo vegetarian' diet definition some consumers use accepts milk and egg products but typically still excludes gelatin. Defensible vegetarian-claimed supplements use HPMC, pullulan, modified starch or other plant-derived capsule shells. Marketing a gelatin-capsule supplement as vegetarian is a high-visibility compliance and reputational risk especially under retailer vegan/vegetarian category vendor specifications.
Is vitamin D3 from lanolin acceptable for halal or kosher certification?
Generally yes for both halal and kosher because lanolin is sheep's wool grease — extracted without slaughter of the animal — and sheep are halal/kosher acceptable species (sheep is halal if halal-slaughtered for meat purposes, but the wool grease extraction does not implicate slaughter rules; sheep is kosher acceptable). However lanolin-derived D3 is not vegan because it is animal-derived. Vegan SKUs require vitamin D3 from lichen source (Cladonia rangiferina and related species) at premium cost. The certification pathway depends on the SKU's claimed status — kosher+halal SKUs can use lanolin D3; vegan SKUs require lichen D3; SKUs claiming all four (vegan/vegetarian/kosher/halal) require lichen D3 and broader vegan-spec formulation throughout.
Do we need separate manufacturing facilities for kosher and halal versus standard production?
Not necessarily — many certifying bodies accept shared-facility manufacturing with appropriate segregation and validated cleaning between certified and non-certified campaigns. Kosher certification specifically may require koshering of equipment (a defined procedure under rabbinic supervision) between non-kosher and kosher production, on-site mashgiach supervision during kosher runs, and dedicated equipment where the non-kosher prior use was meat or significantly conflicting. Halal certification generally requires halal-trained personnel, Islamic dietary law cleaning standards, and validation of cross-contamination control between halal and non-halal campaigns. The certifying body for each certification (OU, IFANCA, JAKIM etc.) defines the specific segregation requirement; the defensible operational approach is to engage the certifying body early in the manufacturing setup decision rather than assume shared-facility acceptability and discover incompatibility during audit.
