Waitrose Quality Standards
Waitrose's own-brand supplier programme — Waitrose Quality Standards and the Waitrose Farm Assessment — layers above BRCGS Issue 9 with welfare, integrity and ingredient-sourcing expectations that frequently exceed even M&S in specific categories. RSPCA Assured is the welfare floor for most animal categories; LEAF Marque is the preferred sustainable-farming credential. This page covers what Waitrose Quality Standards add above BRCGS, how technical visits run, and where most own-brand listings are decided.
01What Waitrose Quality Standards are
Waitrose Quality Standards (WQS) are the retailer-specific manuals that govern own-brand product safety, integrity, welfare and quality above BRCGS Issue 9. They are category-specific, evolved iteratively rather than published as a single annual standard, and signed off by Waitrose category technologists in concert with the supplier.
The Waitrose Farm Assessment is the primary-production layer for animal and produce categories. Together with Red Tractor below and BRCGS above the processor, WQS forms the supplier stack Waitrose technical managers operate against.
02RSPCA Assured and LEAF Marque
Waitrose has historically led UK retail on animal welfare. RSPCA Assured is the welfare floor for most own-brand animal categories — laying hens, broiler chicken, pigs, dairy, beef, sheep, salmon and trout. Some categories require higher than RSPCA Assured (e.g. native breed, slow-grown, outdoor-bred deltas).
LEAF Marque is Waitrose's preferred sustainable-farming credential for produce, with strong uptake across own-brand fresh fruit, vegetables and salads. Suppliers selling produce into Waitrose own-brand without LEAF Marque are increasingly the exception rather than the rule.
03Integrity, claim chain and label declaration
Integrity findings at Waitrose are listing-jeopardising in the same way as at M&S. Origin, breed, welfare and sourcing claims must be evidenced through the supply chain end-to-end, with documented chain of custody for every retailer-bearing claim. Label declaration accuracy is policed tightly — weight/count deficits, mis-declared allergens or unverified claims trigger immediate technical review.
04Complaint thresholds tighter than market average
Waitrose's customer base is more vocal per unit sold than the major-retailer average, and the brand-reputation clauses bite hard. The result is a complaint-rate ceiling per category that is typically tighter than at Tesco, Sainsbury's or Asda. Suppliers that drift above the ceiling enter a technical review process quickly, and a sustained trend without a CAPA story is a route to delist.

06Common pitfalls
- Letting one of the multiple required certificates lapse and not noticing until the visit.
- Treating welfare claims as a marketing matter rather than a chain-of-custody matter.
- Discounting the complaint-rate ceiling because the absolute volume is small.
- Specifications evolving away from the Waitrose-signed-off version without a controlled change request.
Frequently asked questions
Q.Is RSPCA Assured mandatory for all Waitrose animal categories?+
It is the welfare floor for most own-brand animal categories. Some categories require higher than RSPCA Assured (native breed, slow-grown, outdoor deltas).
Q.Does Waitrose accept BRCGS or does it require its own audit?+
Waitrose accepts BRCGS Issue 9 as the GFSI processor scheme and layers WQS technical visits above it.
Q.How does Waitrose compare to M&S on demands?+
M&S is the most consistently demanding across the full programme; Waitrose can exceed M&S in specific categories (welfare deltas, native-breed claims, produce sustainability) but tends to be lighter on documentary process at the manufacturer level.
Q.Is LEAF Marque required for all Waitrose produce suppliers?+
It is strongly preferred and increasingly the norm; manufacturers without it are the exception. Discuss with the Waitrose category technologist before committing to a produce listing without LEAF.
