RSPCA Assured

TL;DR

RSPCA Assured — known until 2015 as Freedom Food — is the UK's higher-welfare animal-production assurance scheme. It certifies welfare across laying hens, broilers, pigs, dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, farmed salmon and farmed trout against welfare standards written by the RSPCA's farm-animal scientists. For UK food manufacturers, RSPCA Assured is the welfare floor for many M&S, Waitrose and Co-op own-brand animal products, and an increasingly common requirement at Sainsbury's, Tesco Finest and other premium tiers. This page covers the standards, the audit cycle, the chain-of-custody implications for manufacturers, and how V5 records the credential through the supply chain.

01What RSPCA Assured is

RSPCA Assured is operated by RSPCA Assured Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the RSPCA charity. Welfare standards are written by the RSPCA's farm-animal scientists and updated on a published cycle informed by veterinary and ethological evidence. Certification is delivered by independent third-party assessors trained to the scheme.

RSPCA Assured is a higher-welfare scheme: its standards exceed UK statutory minima and exceed Red Tractor's welfare standards on the dimensions most material to animal welfare science (stocking density, enrichment, outdoor access where applicable, transport, slaughter handling).

02Species and standards

  • Laying hens — barn, free-range and organic systems; stocking density and enrichment above legal minima.
  • Broiler chickens — slower-growing breeds, lower stocking densities, environmental enrichment.
  • Pigs — outdoor or higher-welfare indoor systems with enrichment, farrowing welfare requirements.
  • Dairy cattle — housing, lameness control, calf welfare.
  • Beef cattle and sheep — handling, housing, transport.
  • Farmed salmon and trout — stocking density, water quality, slaughter welfare.

03Audit cycle and chain of custody

Producer farms are audited at least annually with periodic unannounced visits under the integrity programme. Critically for manufacturers, chain-of-custody certification extends through hauliers, abattoirs, processors and packers — without a valid chain-of-custody certificate at each step, the finished product cannot carry the RSPCA Assured logo or the underlying welfare claim.

Mass-balance reconciliation between RSPCA-Assured material in and RSPCA-Assured-labelled product out is the most frequent finding at processor level. Like Red Tractor, the most common failure mode is at the manufacturer, not at the farm — the certificate is current but the segregation, identification or mass-balance evidence is weak.

05Common pitfalls

  • Treating welfare claims as a marketing matter rather than a chain-of-custody matter.
  • Buying mixed RSPCA-Assured and non-Assured material on the same line without segregation evidence.
  • Letting the haulier's chain-of-custody certificate lapse.
  • Confusing RSPCA Assured with Red Tractor welfare — RSPCA Assured is higher-welfare and not equivalent.

Frequently asked questions

Q.Is RSPCA Assured the same as 'free range'?+

No. 'Free range' is a defined legal term in the UK (with category-specific definitions). RSPCA Assured is a higher-welfare scheme that may apply to barn, free-range or organic systems depending on species and standard.

Q.Does RSPCA Assured replace Red Tractor?+

No. Many farms hold both: Red Tractor as the industry baseline plus RSPCA Assured as the higher-welfare layer. For M&S and Waitrose, both are typically required.

Q.Can imported product carry RSPCA Assured?+

Only if every step in the chain back to the originating farm is RSPCA-Assured-certified. In practice the scheme is overwhelmingly UK-based.

Q.How is welfare audited at slaughter?+

Slaughter welfare is audited by trained assessors against scheme-specific protocols covering handling, stunning effectiveness and bleed-out. Slaughter-step non-conformities can suspend the chain of custody.
