V5 Ultimate vs MasterControl

MasterControl Quality Excellence is an eQMS — a document, training, CAPA, change-control and audit system. It assumes your execution (recipe execution, weighing, in-process checks, packaging) happens in another system (an MES, an ERP module, or paper) and that records flow back into MasterControl for review. V5 Ultimate is a unified MES + WMS + QMS: the recipe IS the batch record, the operator works inside it, and the QMS objects (deviations, CAPAs, change controls) are wired to the exact step, lot and serial they came from. If you already own MasterControl and only need to digitise the floor, V5 can sit alongside it. If you're starting fresh and don't want two systems to validate, V5 replaces both layers.

This is the biggest functional gap. MasterControl added Manufacturing Excellence to address it, but the core product was built for document-room workflows. V5 was built operator-first: kiosk + handheld UX, scale streaming, scanner-driven weigh-out, two-person dispense, in-process check gating, label printing at the station, equipment lockouts for out-of-calibration tools. The batch record is not assembled at the end — it is the live UI the operator is using.

MasterControl is offered as cloud (Salesforce-style multi-tenant) or hosted, with a heavyweight validation package. V5 ships in two deployments: Lovable Cloud (multi-tenant Postgres with row-level isolation) and V5 Ultimate On-Premises (containerised, air-gap capable, customer-owned keys and data). On-prem matters for radiopharma, defence and certain blood/tissue customers who cannot send records off-site. Validation evidence (IQ/OQ/PQ templates, traceability matrix, GAMP 5 categorisation) ships in both deployments.

MasterControl has added generative AI for document drafting and audit prep. V5's AI layer is regime-aware — it changes terminology, evidence templates and prompts based on which industry the tenant is in (pharma BMR vs medical-devices DHR vs FSMA 204 KDE), and is constrained to never produce a release-gating decision a human hasn't co-signed. Both vendors are explicit that AI does not e-sign under Part 11; a qualified human always does.

MasterControl quotes per named user per year on a multi-year subscription, with implementation services billed separately. V5 publishes per-user / month for Cloud and an annual term licence for On-Premises, with a free trial and no minimum seat count for self-serve evaluation. For enterprise procurement both vendors negotiate Order Forms under a master agreement; V5's MSA and a downloadable on-prem term-licence schedule are public on the site.

Pure document/quality teams without a floor problem, organisations with a deeply embedded MasterControl install across many sites who don't want to consolidate, or buyers who specifically need MasterControl's partner ecosystem and reference base for board-level risk comfort.

Single-system buyers who want execution + quality on one validated platform, on-prem / air-gap requirements, multi-industry sites where the same plant runs pharma and food (or device and supplement), or teams that want the production record to self-build instead of being reconstructed from paper at end-of-batch.
