Electronic 'heads-up' to the retailer telling them what's on the truck before it arrives.
EDI 856 — the Advance Ship Notice (ASN) — is the X12 EDI transaction sent to a retailer just before a shipment leaves, describing what's on each pallet (SSCC), each carton, each item, by lot. Required by all major US retailers; mis-shipping is chargeable. V5 builds the 856 from the work order's outbound pallet build and validates it against the retailer's spec before send.
