BOM Explosion

bill of materials explosion · requirements explosion

TL;DR

Multiplying out every level of a multi-level Bill of Materials against a demand quantity to produce gross component requirements, respecting scrap, yield and phantom assemblies.

BOM Explosion is the recursive walk down a multi-level Bill of Materials: at each level, the parent quantity is multiplied by each child's per-unit usage, adjusted for scrap factor and yield, and rolled into the gross requirement for that component. Phantom (transient) assemblies are passed through without generating a planned order; co-products and by-products are netted in the opposite direction.

It is the first stage of MRP — the gross requirement is then time-phased against the lead time and netted against available inventory to produce planned orders. V5 runs the explosion against the approved formula version (the same artifact the MMR snapshots) so the plan and the floor are mathematically aligned.
